Police seek public's help in finding "fake" cop

Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating an incident in which a man wearing a police like uniform pulled over a woman as she operated her vehicle on Wellwood Avenue in North Lindenhurst Friday morning, Oct. 5.

The woman told detectives that she was driving to the bank when she noticed a dark sedan with a red light on the roof behind her. The victim said she heard a siren and when she went to pull into the bank parking lot at the corner of Gear Avenue and North Wellwood Avenue, the operator of the sedan got on a microphone and told her to pull over instead of going into the parking lot. She complied and a Hispanic man approached the driver's side window.

The suspect was dressed in a police-like uniform. He had a name plate with Xs and numbers on the right side of his chest and a badge on the left. After a brief discussion as to why she was pulled over, he asked the woman for her license and registration. He then reached in and grabbed her wallet. He asked her to step out of the car and as she did he grabbed her hair and threw her to the ground. When she looked up the suspect was now wearing a black ski mask and yelling at her to give him her money. The victim told him she did not have money. The suspect then took two of her credit cards, told her not to get up and drove away in an unknown direction.

The suspect is described as a light-skinned Hispanic man, about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a thin build. He spoke with a thick Spanish accent. He was wearing a police-type uniform and may have been wearing a gun belt. The vehicle is described as a dark sedan with a red bubble type light with a loud speaker.

The investigation is continuing. Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call the First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
