Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center's Maureen Walsh, RN, BSN, nurse manager of 3 South, was named the hospital's Samaritan of the Year. Maureen, of East Islip, joined the hospital in 1988. She began her career as a graduate nurse on C Unit and later transferred to 3 South. Walsh progressed up the clinical ladder, becoming nurse manager in 1997.

She is an active participant in community events including health fairs and walks. Walsh co-chairs the hospital's Integrative Medicine Committee and is a member of the Magnet Steering Committee. Her colleagues describe her as, "an experienced leader who is committed to clinical excellence and promotes autonomy and accountability among her staff." Maureen and her staff on 3 South consistently receive complimentary letters from patients and families about the quality care received on the unit.

Walsh is currently enrolled in Adelphi's master's in nursing program. In 2006, she achieved certification in nursing administration. She is an active member of the NY Organization of Nurse Executives, the Orthopedic Nurses Association and co-chairs the membership committee of the Long Island Chapter of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses.

In 2006, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center was named a recipient of the Magnet Award for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The designation is the result of a rigorous evaluation that included extensive interviews.
