Corporal Anthony Casamento Medal Honor exhibit opening Friday at WI library

Shown in the photo is Corporal Anthony Casamento, USMC receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Jimmy Carter in 1980.
In 1980 Corporal Anthony Casamento, USMC, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Jimmy Carter, 38 years after the West Islip resident's heroism on Guadalcanal in 1942. The West Islip Public Library will have the opportunity to display corporal Casamento's Medal of Honor and other related memorabilia through the generosity of his daughter, Mary Casamento. A ceremony to mark the opening of this exhibit will be held on Friday, October 12, 2 p.m. in the Darline L. Carter Community of the West Islip Public Library, 3 Higbie Ln., West Islip. Mary Casamento will be in attendance, as will be a number of local public officials and civic leaders. The public is invited to attend this event and following the ceremony there will be a reception featuring light refreshments, courtesy of the Friends of the West Islip Public Library.
