W.I. student receives prestigious music invitation
scored a perfect 800 on his math SAT, scored 5s on last year's AP Physics and AP Statistics exams, and placed second in the Suffolk County Math Compe- tition. He is a member of the All-State Band, the All-County Orchestra, and is First Chair with the Nassau/Suffolk Wind Symphony (for which he plays the oboe) and the West Islip High School NYSSMA Gold with Distinction Level Wind Ensemble. In addition, he is a percussionist with the West Islip High School Marching Band, and has performed on both the piano and oboe in the high school Pit Orchestra, Chorus, and Symphonic Orchestra, reports Music Director Bernie Jones.

Adding yet another line to his already-impressive school resume, West Islip High School senior Andrew Leiman has been invited to perform the Schubert Impromptu No.2 at the second annual NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Piano Showcase in Rochester during the 2007 Winter Conference. The evening recital will take place in November in the Convention Center. Already this new school year, Leiman has been named a Long Island Scholar-Artist for his incredible talent and academic prowess, says High School Principal Ken Hartill. Leiman's musical talent has led him to perform in the New York City Columbus Day Parade, the Channel 12 Tree Lighting Broadcast, and Walt Disney World performances. He has received a perfect NYSSMA solo score of 100 on the highest level of music.

Additionally, Leiman "shows compassion for his fellow man by volunteering weekly at a local soup kitchen where he serves those in need and also performs on piano for their enjoyment," reports guidance counselor John Bencivenga.
