Babylon bounces back, beats Baymen 34-6 Up from an ugly defeat, the Babylon Panthers ripped the Hampton Bays Baymen at Williams Field, Saturday. The Black D stifled the Baymen, keeping them to a net 87 yards (only 26 rushing) from scrimmage in a 34-6 victory. Babylon ends Beau Bachety and Matt Lauria hounded Hampton quarterback Nick Lynch, forcing fifteen incomplete passes. The two, along with tackle Mike Mammola, chalked up a trio of sacks and Bachety batted one down in the backfield. The Panthers pounced for five turnovers with interceptions by Greg Griffo, Alex Grandal and T. J. DiMartino and fumble recoveries by Conor Tennyson and Keith Menger. Babylon linebacker Richie Smith made his varsity debut. Babylon tailback Bryan Schweitzer carried 29 times for 158 yards and four touchdowns. Aaron Pinto had 6 carries for 71 yards and fullback Joe Bender was 10 for 43 with a number of key blocks. The Panthers scored twice in the opening period. Griffo's pick at the Hampton 39 led to the first score. Schweitzer blasted in over right tackle from the 1- yard line. Kerry Carlock added the first of his four extra point kicks. Twenty seconds later, the Panthers scored again. The ensuing kickoff was muffed. Tennyson dove on it at the 16. Schweitzer carried it to the 10. Untouched, he scored on the next play racing through a huge hole on the left side between Pat Pietrowski and Scott Melow. Albert Schweitzer could've strolled through that one untouched. The Baymen got on the board in the second quarter going 72 yards on six plays. Here, Lynch took over with a 22-yard run around the left side, a 6-yard left buttonhook to wideout David Acevado and a 32-yard left fly to Acevado taking the ball to the Babylon 10. From there, Lynch was chased around by the Babylon rush, but managed to escape. He rolled right and hit fullback Luis Gracia for the TD. The second half was all Babylon. Schweitzer capped a ten-play, 60-yard drive going through left guard from the 5. The next Panther drive was halted on an interception by Acevado at the Bays 20. Babylon later scored going 57 yards on ten plays. The drive was saved midway when guard Marc Martinez covered a loose ball at the Hampton 31. Schweitzer capped it sweeping the right side from the 5 for the TD. The last score was on Grandal's pick at the Hampton 19. He raced right and went in for the score. DiMartino's interception at the Hampton 38 ended the game. Along with Panther Steve Ermert, Merry Carlock's cheerleaders were there to perform and lead the crowd. You'll see them do their stuff at every game - Jessica Allen, Erin Auer, Claire Buser, Brittany Byrne, Meghan Cernelli, Emma Cullen, Shannon Holgan, Barbara Maier, Kerri McEnroe, Maggie Melito, Sienna Pueleo, Elizabeth Santos, Ashley Quent, Nicole Rugen and Kristen Sutter.
This Saturday, the Panthers play the Shoreham Wildcats at Shoreham in the Battle of the Cats. Second in the preseason seedings, the Wildcats are considered one of the top teams in the division and will want to avenge Babylon's victory last year. Both teams are 2-1. Game time is listed at 2 p.m.
