Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

IT WAS A WEATHER PERFECT DAY for the 15th annual Louis H. Orr Jr. memorial race which was held at the Babylon Yacht Club last Sunday. The late Louis Orr was an ardent sailor, and after his death his friends and sailing associates raised funds for a trophy and annual race to be held in his memory. Thirty one boats participated in the race. Jerry Dunnels was the winner in the non-spinnaker class and Bruce Kennedy and Jim Reichel were co-winners in the spinnaker event. Joe Mulle was regatta chairman and Paul Steinberg's "Jazz" served as the committee boat. Libby Orr and a group of her friends were the guests of Joe Cooper aboard the "Jo Pam" to watch the race. Following the race, the Club awards ceremony was held in the Commodore's Room. This year was a bittersweet day for the sailors. Libby Orr's sister, Shirley Skeffington passed away suddenly on Friday, and a wreath was tossed in the bay by Larry Schaefer aboard "the Loon" before the race. During the awards ceremony a moment of silence was observed for Shirley, who also loved sailing, the Great South Bay and the Babylon Yacht Club.

IT WAS A CASTLE IN SCOTLAND for the beautiful wedding of George Henry Aspland III and Alison Willard. The ceremony was performed in the Wedderbarn Castle in Edinborough. A large contingent from"the states" flew over for the festivities. George is a lawyer and the couple live in Chicago. He's the grandson of former Babylonian Margaret Asplant, now of Del Ray, Florida.

Margaret and her husband Baron and their three children live on Fire Island Avenue in the Village. She is a lifelong Babylon Village resident, and is hoping to keep her children involved as she thinks it's important for them to learn to give back to the community. Everyone on the committee is proud to welcome Margaret to the group.

NEW SMYRNA REUNION PARTY LAST SATURDAY. For over 35 years, a group of Babylon and West Islip families have been vacationing at the colony Beach Club in New Smyrna Beach. Last Saturday, Mary and Jim Grover hosted a party for their New Smyrna friends at the Babylon Yacht Club. It was a glorious day and everyone had a fine time catching up with the news in their families. Champagne and delicious hors d'oeuvres were served with the gracious help of the Grover children and their spouses: Jean and Rich Hand, Michelle and Bob Grover and Jim and Chuck Hoyler. Daughter Nancy and her husband were in their Connecticut home and unable to attend.
