West Islip Fire Department sees increase in number of calls over summer months

The West Islip Fire Department released the total number of responses they made to alarm calls for the month of July. The statistics show that the amount of alarms the Fire Department reacted to increased by more than 10-percent from the end of June to the end of July.

The total amount of alarm calls for July was 235, while the Department responded to 205 calls in June. West Islip Fire Department Chief Michael Delgado attributed the rise in calls to the expanded jurisdiction the department covers during the summer months, which includes Robert Moses State Park.

"During the course of July, we witnessed a sharp increase in the amount of response calls, which the men and women of this Department reacted to in a prompt and efficient manner," said Delgado. "Since our jurisdiction includes Robert Moses State Park, it is expected that these figures will remain high. However, the people that we're proud to protect can be assured that the brave members of this Department stand ready to answer the call at all times."

Figures released for August, show an increase in calls from the previous month. The department responded to 286 calls this August, compared to 235 in July, which represents an increase of more than 20 percent.

The highest volume of calls the Department responded to were EMS calls, where the West Islip Fire Department answered 191 calls. Among the areas the Department assisted with outside of their jurisdiction include Babylon, Bay Shore, Brentwood and North Babylon.

"The statistics demonstrate that over the last several months, the number of emergency calls the West Islip Fire Department has responded to, continues to increase," said Delgado. "It is important to note that as we moved deeper into the summer months and the volume of responses increased, the men and women of this department reacted accordingly and took the action that is necessary to protect the public's well-being."

In addition to the hamlet of West Islip, the department also covers portions of North Bay Shore and areas of Babylon, including Robert Moses State Park. In addition, West Islip volunteers responded and assisted with calls in Ocean Beach (Fire Island), Wyandanch and North Babylon. The West Islip Fire Department responded to 28 calls to communities outside of their jurisdiction during July. In August, it responded to 27 calls throughout town of Islip and Babylon.
