WI residents should make sure their voice is heard Oct. 2 West Islip has a rare opportunity to combine a variety of funding sources to complete millions of dollars in repairs on their school buildings without impacting the local tax bill. Certainly the money being provided by the state, should taxpayers approve the plan on Oct. 2, is public funding, but this money is from a pool paid for by residents throughout the state. It is already being tapped into by hundreds of other school districts and a "yes" vote on Tuesday, will add West Islip to that list. Additionally, the money in the fund balance that will also be used to pay off these bonds have already been paid by the property owners. Through careful budgeting and spending by the district, those funds have grown each year, and now residents can take advantage of putting them to good use.
The only concern is that West Islip voters will see this plan as a "no brainer" and not get to the polls on Tuesday. That would be a mistake. Whatever your decision on the plan, make sure your voice is heard.
