Babylon Panthers fall to Mount Sinai The Babylon Panthers fell to the powerful Mount Sinai Mustangs last Thursday night at Harry Randall Field in Mount Sinai. The contest was well fought and even throughout the first half, but penalties and turnovers killed the Cats throughout the third and fourth quarters. The final, 26-10 Mustangs. Babylon drew first blood on their initial possession, going 74 yards on six plays. Tailback Bryan Schweitzer swept the right side for 23 yards to the Mount 47-yard line. From there, quarterback Willie Rivas took to the air and gunned to wideout Alex Grandal on a fly down the left side for a touchdown. Kerry Carlock kicked the extra point. The Mustangs answered quickly and went 67 yards. On the first of eight plays, quarterback Sean Kelly rolled left and connected with Connor Fitzgerald, 35 yards to the Babylon 32. Kelly capped the drive sneaking in through left guard from the 2. On an errant pass from center and a fierce Panther rush, the extra point try hit the left upright and fell into the end zone. Schweitzer took the ensuing kickoff, followed a number of key blocks, broke loose and toted it to the Mount 16. A penalty on the kickoff play advanced it further to the 8. But the Mount defense stopped the Panther attack. The Mustangs then mounted a 96-yard scoring drive on ten plays. Tailback James O'Brien raced around the left side to the 1 before fullback Ted Purcher banged it up the middle for the TD. On play action, Kelly lofted a pass to open tight-end Mike Sweeney in the left side of the end zone for a 2-point conversion and Mount was up 14-7. Late in the half, the Panthers drove from their own 37 to the Mustang 11. Mount contained the drive and Carlock hit on a 28-yard field goal with 1:08 on the clock. But the Mustangs weren't done. On their second play, O'Brien slashed through right guard, broke left and went the distance, 74 yards for the TD with 31 seconds remaining in the half. On this extra point attempt, Babylon linebacker T. J. DiMartino blasted through and blocked the kick. Mount Sinai led 20-10 at the half. The second half was marred by penalties and sloppy play. Attempting to hit J. T. Pate on a deep right post, Rivas's pass was intercepted by Kelly at the Mount 18 and returned back to the 44. A 15 yarder was added, taking it to the Babylon 41. Kelly hit Fitzgerald on a right post moving the ball to the 8. A penalty was tacked on to place it at the 4. Babylon defensive tackle Matt Lauria broke in for a sack to push the ball back to the 11. But after stopping the next play there, the Panthers were hit with two more penalties moving it down to the 2-yard line. O'Brien slashed off left tackle for the score. Once again, DiMartino broke in to block the extra point attempt. Babylon's tries for a fourth quarter comeback were thwarted by a pair of picks (Fitzgerald and Kelly) and Mount maintained possession deep in its own territory to run out the clock. Key stats: Babylon - Schweitzer 16 carries for 96 yards, 1 reception for 4, and 4 returns for 108, totaling 208 all-purpose yards. Rivas 5 of 18 passing for 82 yards and a TD.
