Babylon 10-year-olds win fall baseball game opener The Babylon 10-year-old District 34 Silver Medal Champions extended their season when invited to play in the North Babylon Little League fall division. With fall sports coming into play, Babylon lost half their Championship team. It didn't take long to fill the new roster, however. Giving the young men credit, the majority of them are playing two fall sports. With one short week of practice, the team came together quickly. Babylon faced North Babylon for the game opener September 14 at Phelps Lane. In a close defensive game, Babylon won 4-2. Zachary Carmody, starting pitcher for Babylon, pitched three innings, had five strikeouts, gave up an earned run and had three defensive put outs. Relieving pitcher Liam Young pitched two innings with two strikeouts and gave up an earned run. Game closure Jack Conlon came into the last inning for the game save. Babylon's runs came from Christopher Dewey with 2 RBI's, Nicholas Crawford and Dillon Kelly each with an RBI. Babylon's slugger Michael Carlson went 2 for 2 starting Babylon's rallies. North Babylon player, Forde had an impressive out of the park solo homerun. Babylon's next game is Saturday September 22, noon, at North Babylon Phelps Lane. BABYLON'S 5TH GRADE FOOTBALL GAME OPENER The 5th grade football team's 2007 season started Sunday September 9th on their home field at the High School. Babylon played Smithtown for the game opener. Smithtown started the game with the first offensive drive to only be pushed back by Babylon's defense. Babylon took over the ball with great field position led by quarter back Henry Brunjes. Three plays into Babylon's first drive, running back Zachary Carmody ran 37 yards for Babylon's first touchdown of the season. Babylon's fury didn't stop there. Babylon's defensive line was powerful, noseguard Alex Turi along with tackles Matt Lauri and John Botto were making tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Defensive ends Jack Conlon and Jack Kresic went in containing and forcing Smithtown's backfield inside. Now on the inside they had to face linebacker's James Marron, Kyle Buser, Steven Schweitzer, Henry Brunjes and the roving Panther Back Zachary Carmody. The last line of defense was safety Thomas McHugh whose, speed allowed him to make tackles near the line of scrimmage. Smithtown was having a tough time advancing the ball. Babylon's defense had set the tone early swarming all over Smithtown in the game and the offense was feeding off their adrenaline. Brunjes sets up and calls the play for Babylon's second drive. With great blocking fullback Kyle Buser blows a hole wide open for Zack Carmody and is helped with a down field block by James Marron enabling Carmody to go in for a 43 yard touchdown. Third quarter, Brunjes starts by giving the ball to running back Derek Chapey who runs for 18 yards and fullback Kyle Buser blasts up the middle for another 12 yards. Zack Carmody then takes the ball in for a 42yard touchdown. Late in the game Smithtown has a good drive and goes in for a touchdown. Smithtown's extra point is denied by, the Panthers blitzing defense making the tackle behind the line of scrimmage ending the game. BABYLON 5TH GRADE FOOTBALL BABYLON 31, NORTHPORT 7 Babylon 5th Grade Football set the tone early in the game to win at home over Northport Sunday September 16th with a large Panther crowd in the stands. The first play of the game, Northport quarterback was hit so hard by defensive noseguard Alex Turi creating a fumble. A couple of plays later Babylon left tackle Matthew Lauri blasts through the line sacking the quarterback for a loss of 5 yards. Babylon takes possession. Quarterback Henry Brunjes with Babylon's first play of the game is a hand off to running back Zachary Carmody. Carmody's, lane was opened up by hard hitting full back Dylan Dreher and tight end Jack Conlon and runs for a 35 yard touchdown. Northport comes back strong with a 28-yard drive, however they are stopped short of a first down by a hard hit by linebacker Stephen Schweitzer. Babylon's offense sets up for the second drive and sees Northport spreading out along the line. Brunjes hands the ball to fullback Kyle Buser who runs through a huge hole opened up by center Alex Turi and left- guard Jack Kresic, a key linebacker block by right tackle John Botto and a nice down field block on the safety by wingback James Maron enabling Buser to go for a great 63-yard touchdown. The extra point is run in by Buser with a lane opened up by tight end Jack Faccibene. Northport with the ball again is held by Babylon's defensive left tackle Joe Ponzone with two solo tackles and a couple of gang tackles by linebackers Steven Cavalieri and Christian Martino. Brunjes takes the ball, fades back and tosses to Carmody, whose lead blocker Maron kicks out the end and a great secondary block by Dreher enabling Carmody to go for a 44- yard touchdown.
Northport looses the ball quickly by hard, hitting Lori jarring the ball loose and recovering the fumble. Babylon's Jack Conlon takes over at quarterback and hands the ball to running back Derek Chapey who ran for a 33-yard drive, inches of the goal line. Conlon with a quarter back sneak goes in for the touchdown. Half Time was just as exciting. The Babylon Panthers Cheerleading squad has been working hard and had an impressive routine. The girls cheers could be heard from across the field and their performance was outstanding. Third quarter Conlon hands the ball to Chapey who runs through a hole opened up by right tackle Corey Harberg and tightend Martino with a gain of 27 yards. Babylon then looses possession by downs. Northport takes over with a nice drive, which sets up for a 24yard quarterback sneak touchdown and run it in for the extra point. Northport gaining momentum with another drive late in the fourth quarter, are stopped on the Babylon 9yard line. Conlon on the third down, hands the ball to running back Thomas McCue who follows two great blocks made for him by Buser and Dreher enabling him to run for an impressive 9-yard touchdown to end the game! Babylon's next game is September 30th against Three Village at 10:20 a.m. on the H.S. field.
