Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

SHE WAS THERE FROM THE BEGINNING, when renovations started in 1990, and now after after having served in many capacities on the restoration and decorating of the Conklin House, Linn Rohl has tendered her resignation as a member of the Steering Committee. It's safe to say that without Linn Rohl's hard work and creative ability, we wouldn't have the Conklin House in our Village as it is today.

Linn said she enjoyed every minute of her time spent on the project. Her goal when she started out was to restore and maintain the authenticity of the old House, and as any visitor can see, she certainly has succeeded. The Village was very cooperative and residents responded to requests for articles and furnishing and donated items from their homes. Each room is decorated and furnished in total conformity with the period. Many, many people were of great help to Linn, and she is very grateful to everyone who gave of their time. The many events offered to the public- Apples and Art, the dazzling Christmas open house, the Irish poet and more- have become a vital part of the cultural and recreational life in our community. The Conklin House acknowledged her outstanding contribution, and awarded her the volunteer of the Year Award in 1998. Her long-time colleague on the Board Bob Pasch has spoken of her: "Linn was the heart and soul of the Conklin House. She is remarkable person who gets things done."

"BUSY WOMEN" START NEW SEASON The "Busy Women" will hold their first meeting of this season on October 18 at the South Bay Diner Restaurant at 185 Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst. It promises to be a very interesting and informative program. Luncheon will be served. As always guests are most welcome to attend. Interested? Call Claire Meirowitz at 422-6804.

FRIENDS SURPRISE DOTTIE SIMPSON. Champagne flowed at Sunrise Senior Living in West Babylon on Tuesday, September 18 as Dottie Simpson formerly of Dundee Avenue in Argyle Park, Babylon, was surprised by over 50 friends for her 91st birthday. Arriving back from a trip to the Aquarium in Riverhead she heard a chorus of "surprise" from her new friends at Sunrise and long-time friends from Babylon, Elena deMurias, Mary Alive, Carolina and Nora Dunn, Fran Pasch, Christine Lane, Loretta Sullivan and her beloved German Shepherd Pepper from West Islip, Aileen Eppig, Adrian Killen and her husband Jim the party photographer. Dottie blew out the candles on two cakes and opened lots of presents. It was a wonderful afternoon of good cheer- enjoyed by all.

A BIG LOSS FOR OUR VILLAGE. September 21 was a sad day in our Village. We lost one of our most prominent residents when Shirley Skeffington died on Friday. Shirley was a life-long resident of Babylon Village. She raised her family here in Argyle Park. She loved the Village and supported many projects over the years to improve and beautify the area. She had so many friends, a beautiful family and led a full, active life, right up until the end. She will be missed by all of us who knew her, by her beautiful family and by the community she loved.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW. Apples and Art is coming to the Conklin House on October 12, 13 and 14. Friday night will feature the art exhibit and reception for the artists, Saturday the Apple Festival will be held on the lawn from noon to 4 p.m. and then on Sunday time to see the art exhibit again or tour the house. The barn will also be open during the weekend.

SEND GET WELL WISHES to former resident Marge Burns. Marge was in the hospital for several days last week but we hope she's on the mend now. Drop her a line at 1880 Brookwood Ave., Apt. 405, Burlington, NC 27215.
