Alleghany Avenue in Lindenhurst third grade students learn about Tar Beach

Tar Beach is a book and quilt painting by African-American author and illustrator Faith Ringgold based on her childhood growing up in Harlem. The book tells the story of an eightyear old named Cassie and her summer family get-togethers on the tarcoved roof of her apartment building.

Nancy Walsh's art classes at Alleghany Avenue School, Lindenhurst, did a special project for Black History month and Woman's History month commemorating the book and artist. It was a multidisciplinary art project that combined art, reading and writing. It demonstrated how art can be used to reinforce understanding and provide a context for other subjects while expressing thoughts and feelings in artwork.

In the photo, third grade students from Jennifer Corrigan's class show their artwork.
