WBJHS students get lesson in writing
Marie Gippetti, Long Island educator and columnist presented The Craft of Writing to sixth grade students and their teachers at West Babylon Junior High School on June 15. Using literature and visuals, her presentation explored the power of sensory and figurative language to create imagery. She told students
strong verbs and specific nouns add muscle to their writing."
The students had fun using descriptive language, vivid verbs and active voices. They impressed their teachers and Gippetti with their enthusiasm, humor and high quality of writing. Each student received an autographed bookmark depicting writing strategies. The PTA, with President Roe Basile, funded the program through BOCES Arts-in- Education while a committee of English Language Arts and Reading teachers including Julie Powers, Susan Gottlieb, Diane Grimsley- Goldberg and Heidi Strickland, selected and hosted the author's visit.
