Paul J. Bellew Elementary in West Islip holds Living Exhibit for historical lesson

At the Paul J. Bellew Elementary School's Living Exhibit in West Islip was Albert Einstein. So were Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Juliette Low, the founder of Girl Scouts, and Dr. Suess. No, teachers didn't set up a wax museum, for as the title of the event indicates, the historical lesson and exhibit were "living." Students did extensive research on the figures they were to portray, made their costumes, and rehearsed what they would say when the exhibit opened to the community, says teacher Greg Schmalenberger. A green paper button was on each youngster's shoulder, which when pressed by a visitor, began the vocalization of all he or she had learned. Described by many in attendance as a "wow" event, the project also delighted the children, who thought learning this way, as opposed to reading about these icons of history in books and on the computer, was fun.
