Henrietta Pfannschmidt, former West Islip resident

Former West Islip resident Henrietta Marie Pfannschmidt died on August 9, 2007. She was 89- years-old.

Mrs. Pfannschmidt was born in Brooklyn on February 27, 1918 and married George F. Pfannschmidt in 1936. The couple started a family and several years later they moved toWest Islip. Ms. Pfannschmidt lived there until she retired and moved to Florida in 1975.

A woman who was creative and enjoyed making things with her hands Mrs. Pfannschmidt enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and crafts.

She worked as an assembler for 25 years at Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, which later became Fairchild Republic.

"I remember my mother took two coats and made me a coat and hat out of them for me" recalled her daughter Bernadette Hering.

Very early in her marriage, Mrs. Phannschmidt's mother suffered a heart attack and required care. Ms. Phannschmidt and her husband moved in with her mother to provide her with that care.

"She was a good role model," said her daughter Bernadette M. Hering of Jensen Beach Florida. "She was a devoted person and a very dear friend growing up."

Ellie Misegades of West Islip, a longtime friend of Mrs. Pfannschmidt's, remembers fondly the time the two women spent together with their families. Bernadette remembers her mother as a "very open person."

"When I was growing up, many of my friends would ask me to talk to my mother about private issues and get advice for them," she recalled.

Mrs. Pfannschmidt was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Club in West Islip, an organization of which her husband was one of the founders. When she retired and moved to Florida, she continued to be active in her community, joining the Tarpon Springs club in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Pfhannschmidt is survived by her son George F. Pfannschmidt Jr., of Palm Harbor, Florida and her son-in-law Hank Hering. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Henry C. and Jennifer Hering Jr., Glenn B. Hering, George F. and Monika Pfannschmidt III, Kim E. and Steve Hering-Bennett, Wendy P. and Damon Runyon, Gregory A. and Jeannine Pfannschmidt, and by 13 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Her two brothers Charles Diemer and John Schaedel also predeceased her.

Visitations were held on Monday, August 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Vinson Funeral Home, 456 East Tarpon Avenue, Tarpon Springs, Florida, 34689. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Ms. Pfannschmidt's name to Tarpon Masonic Lodge #112 F. & A.M., PO Box 1027, Tarpon Springs, Florida, 34688.
