Babylon Village residents look to slow down traffic on DPA
"The speed limit is 30-miles-an-hour but the cars whiz by much faster than that," said Tara McGuinness whose home is on a side street off of Deer Park Avenue. "With so many residents, something has to be done because this is becoming a real speedway." "I moved here two years ago and even in that short time I see the speed of the cars increasing," agreed Darin Howell, another resident. "It was purely good luck that no one was injured in the most recent accident." Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino said he is aware of the residents' concerns and agrees that speeding, not only along Deer Park Avenue and in the Village but throughout Long Island, is a problem. "I have been in contact with the First Precinct and they have been very cooperative in placing the speed signs up there and issuing tickets," said the Mayor. "We also put up the Village's speed signs on other days and are working with the precinct to ensure that enforcement follows these warnings." Robert Cassagne, Inspector for the Suffolk County First Precinct said that monitoring speed along Deer Park Avenue has been a focus of the precinct for several years. "We were successful in eliminating the speeding and drag racing along the other portion of Deer Park Avenue, Route 231," said Cassagne, "and we coninue to monitor the area from Sunrise Highway down to Main Street." In the last three months, the department has issued 20 summonses to drivers on Deer Park Avenue from Sunrise Highway to Main Street in Babylon. Another 19 were issued on Thursday, Aug. 20 and the department is deploying the speed sign to alert drivers who travel that roadway to how fast they are going above the posted speed limit. Meanwhile McGuinness and her neighbors are gathering names on a petition that they plan to file with the Village of Babylon. "We are hoping that the Mayor will help us in getting this dangerous situation resolved," said McGuinness. That accident occured Sunday, August 19 at the corner of Deer Park Avenue and Katawamack. A truck was heading south on Deer Park Avenue at a very high rate of speed, according to witnesses, crossed the northbound lane, proceeded to go on a lawn, through a fence, striking a tree. It eventually came to a stop after colliding into a porch with brick pillars.
"At one point it appeared that the truck went airborne," said McGuinness. "It was quite a scene."
