USPS offers boating courses beginning September 26 The Boat Smart Course for new boaters or a review for the more experienced boater will be offered this fall in the East Islip and Islip Terrace area. This class is open to anyone 10 years of age and older. The Boat Smart Course will begin Wednesday, September 26, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the East Islip Middle School cafeteria, 100 Redmen St., Islip Terrace, off the Craig B. Gariepy Avenue. Registration for the class will be open to the first 60 people who sign up online at www.gsbps.org and link on to GSB Public Courses and also on the first evening of classes from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, at the East Islip Middle School cafeteria. The Boat Smart Course will meet on the following dates: September 26 and October 3, 10, 17 and 24. The Boat Smart Course is being offered to the public by the United States Power Squadrons - America's boating club. "The Squadron" is a nonprofit organization of boating enthusiasts who have already taught over three million students how to make their boating safer and more enjoyable. Instructors are knowledgeable, New York State Certified volunteer members of the organization, who have taken advanced squadron courses. The courses are offered to adults and young adults in over 500 local areas nationwide. The course is free, but there is a nominal fee of $35 for course materials.
