Stern packs supplies for Iraqi troops and awards grant to Jacob's Light Foundation
Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th L.D. joined with the Jacob's Light Foundation and over 100 volunteers, to organize, bag and pack supplies for our troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Legislator Stern also awarded a Legislative grant to the Foundation to help defray the cost of shipping the care packages overseas. The Jacob's Light Foundation's mission is to provide the comforts of home to our men and women serving overseas and focuses particularly on those who have no family support. The organization has sent more than 100,000 pounds of supplies to our troops. Each care package contains treats, toiletries, batteries, and letters of support from the community.
The organization was founded in memory and in honor of Jacob Samuel Fletcher, who was killed by a roadside bomb in November 2003 in Iraq. Since then his mother, Dorine Kenney, shown in the photo with Legislator Stern, has devoted herself to making life a little better for our military in Iraq and Afghanistan. "As Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, but more importantly as an American, I am pleased to help the fine work of the Jacob's Light Foundation and honor the dedication of Dorine Kenney, who despite suffering the tragic loss of her son, works tirelessly to make life better for those brave men and women who continue to serve and protect our country," Legislator Stern said.
