Local resident ordained into Ministry of Word and Sacrament Lutheran Church

The John Olsen family, of Babylon, celebrated the ordination of Donna Marie (Mrs. John) Olsen into the Ministry of Word and Sacrament of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on Sunday, July 1 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Deer Park.

The Church, on Bay Shore Road off Deer Park Avenue, was filled to capacity with the ordinand's family, friends and members of the congregation, as the Rev. Peter Strommen, Bishop of the Northeastern Minnesota Synod, ELCA, presided, assisted by Pastor Dennis O'Rourke and Deacon Robert Rainis of Ascension and Pastor Michael Ryan, King of Kings Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Readers were John, Molly and Meghan Olsen. Servers were Ascension's pastors John Krahn and Napoleon Plaza and Deacon July Gioeli of Summerfield, Florida. Crucifer was Andrew Rainis and torch bearers were Lauren and Zachary Rainis, while Barbara (Mrs. Robert) Rainis carried the Gospel. Head usher was Warren Hults of Deer Park. Music was provided by David Johnson, director of music at Ascension, while the soloist was Carol (Mrs. Howard) Haberly of Babylon.

The Olsens have been members of Ascension for many years, and in his sermon Pastor O'Rourke recalled Donna's journey toward ordination as a faithful daughter of the

church family. He extended

the congregation's love and

good wishes as Pastor Olsen begins her new ministry.

After the laying on of hands and blessing by Bishop and clergy and presentation of her pastoral stole, the newly-ordained Pastor Olsen was introduced to the congregation to their delighted acclamation and applause.

Following the worship service , the Olsen family hosted a luncheon for everyone at the family home. Among the guests were Mary Mulari and Linda Jeffery of Faith Lutheran Church in Hout Lakes and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Aurora, Minnesota where Pastor Olsen will serve both congregations.
