Amityville resident John J. Bergaglio, Jr., who relished spending time on
the beach near his West Gilgo Beach home, died August 8, 2007 at Good
Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. He was 68-years-old and lived in
Amityville for almost 15 years. From 1970 to 1971, he served as president
of the Amityville Kiwanis and loved to dabble in local politics.
Born on August 28, 1938 in East Massapequa to John J. and Helen
(Bierling), he was a 1956 Amityville High School graduate and served in
the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960. After moving to Kings Park in 1970,
he moved to his Gilgo Beach home in 1997 and spent most of his time on the
beach.
According to his son, John, his dad was a self- employed contractor,
worked in real estate and had two local businesses: U.S. Access and USA
Flood Vents, which he was actively running until the time he passed. In
his spare time he liked to play golf and spend time with his beloved
family.
Mr. Bergaglio leaves behind his longtime companion, Eve Griffon of
Woodbury; his ex-wife, Diane of Lake Ronkonkoma; his father, John J., Sr.;
his children: John J. "Butch" IV and his wife Andrea of Kings Park and
Charlene D. Opatkiewicz and her husband Neal of Saratoga, New York; his
grandchildren: John J. "Jake" V, Faith E. and Luke T.; his sisters: Lucy
Fox of Cape Coral, Florida and Madelene Montali of Wellesley,
Massachusetts.
A Funeral Service was conducted at the Powell Funeral Home in
Amityville by Father Randolph Jon Germinder, rector, St. Mary's Episcopal
Church, Amityville, on August 12, 2007. Father Germinder celebrated a
Requiem Mass at St. Mary's on August 13, 2007 followed by Military Honors
and a private cremation.
