Mary Hayward: lifelong Babylonian
by Tiffany Elliott

Mary Elizabeth Ryan Hayward, a well-known Babylon native who taught swimming at the Babylon Yacht Club and was golf tournament winner many times over, died August 18, 2007 at North Shore University Hospital.

"She was a wonderful person and a lifelong friend of ours," said Jane Kane, a former Babylon neighbor. "I don't remember when I didn't know Mary. Our kids grew up together and her husband introduced me to my husband."

Born in Babylon, Mary Elizabeth Ryan, she was a lifelong resident to the Bay Shore and Babylon areas, and a winter resident of Mulberry, Florida. A graduate of Holy Child in Suffern, New York and Adelphi College, she received her Masters Degree in Education from the State of New York. For many years she was a third grade teacher in the Levittown School District.

She loved sports and taught many of them at the yacht club and raced in inter-club events. A longtime member of the Southward Ho Country Club, she won many golf tournaments and was active in the Southside Garden Club. She was also a former member of the Southside Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. Hayward leaves behind her husband of 51 years, Charles Francis of Bay Shore and Mulberry, Florida; her children: Elizabeth Nufer of Baltimore, Maryland and Point O'Woods, New York, Charles F. Jr. of Brightwaters and Dudley F. of Mastic Beach; and her eight grandsons.

A Funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Babylon, on August 21, 2007. Private arrangements entrusted to the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home.

Donations in Mrs. Hayward's name can be sent to the St. John Neumann Catholic Church 501 E. Carter Rd., Lakeland, FL33813 or the St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 39 North Carll Avenue, Babylon, NY 11702.
