North Babylon School blaze will not delay school opening
by Tiffany Elliott

A fire that took place at North Babylon High School on Friday, August 17, caused damage to a classroom and hallway. That is the bad news.

The good news, according to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Laria is that all of the cleanup work has been completed, and the fire will not interrupt the regular opening of school. In addition, said Laria, all of the emergency procedures in place kicked in as expected when the fire erupted, giving the district a clear indication that they were in good working order.

The fire occurred at approximately 2:26 a.m., and according to the Fire Marshall's office, it was caused by a box of potato chips that were stored above an electric stove in the home economics room. Somehow the stove was activated and the heat set the box ablaze.

The cost of the clean up is being paid for through insurance, said Laria.

"We were lucky it wasn't a gas stove, because we could have had an explosion," said Laria, who added that an outside group had been meeting in the school and had used the classroom to store food several hours before the fire, perhaps unintentionally turning the stove element on.

The district hired a fire restoration company which has completed its work.

"While we would have preferred that this did not happen, it showed us that our fire system is working fine," said Laria. "The alarms went off and the fire doors closed shut during the emergency."
