Heard It On The Grapevine ONE OF THE BEST PARTIES OF THE SEASON at the Babylon Yacht Club is always the "Afterguard Party" thrown by the senior members of the club, and last Sunday Joan and Bud St. John and Jill and Barry Corbett carried on the great tradition when they hosted the popular affair. They were very ably assisted by a great committee, all dressed in red and white who were working all evening long. As always the members provided tea sandwiches and other goodies. There were shrimp and lots and lots of hot hors d'oeuvres. The most popular food venue was Jimmy Martino's clam bar, featuring clams on the half shell and other goodies, always a top favorite. It's always fun to visit and chat with former members, many of them who are from out of town. Betsey Davies still lives in Cape Cod and looks terrific; Lynn and Dick Daytz were up from their Florida home; Libby Burns of Missouri was here to visit with her parents, John and Bud St. John, heard Jimmy Faas was here from his Vermont home; loved talking to Nancy Tuttle who's in town visiting her sister Sue Borg from her home in Lake Placid, and many, many more. All this and the wonderful music of the Banjoaires: What more could you ask for? Chalk up another one for the great hosts and committee. ON A SAD NOTE: Everyone is mourning the loss of a former long-time member, Betty Ryan Hayward, who passed away last week. Betty taught swimming and was a top sailor at the Yacht Club some years ago and is fondly remembered by the many children who learned to swim under her guidance. She was also a top golfer at Southward Ho. Our heartfelt sympathy to her beautiful family. ON THE MEND Bob Morris is doing very well after surgery several weeks ago at Roosevelt Hospital. He's already been out and about. Way to go Bob! REMEMBER BOB MATHERSON? Bob was active politically and owned the Oak Beach Inn, a very popular spot with the young set back in the '80s. Residents complained about the noise and other problems at the restaurant and it was in the news for years. The Inn was sold some years ago and will be a County park and Bob has moved to Key West where he opened a bar. Now we hear on the grapevine that the bar is closed and Bob wants to join the ranks of political consultants. He's written to former political associates up here in Suffolk County for references and letters of recommendation. We'll keep you posted. AND SPEAKING OF KEY WEST It was great to see Vi Batty, now of Key West, at some of the events at the Babylon Yacht Club. Vi has been visiting family up here for most of the month of August. Vi lived here for many years with her late husband Walter and her sons Peter and Derek. Peter now lives in Key West with his family and Derek is still in Babylon. GIVE US A BREAK. Several friends have gotten tickets in the Village lately. Why didn't they put the money in the meter? Because they didn't have a quarter available. We wish they could have meters available that will accept nickels and dimes as well as quarters. We don't always remember to carry quarters with us when we shop. YES FRIENDS, THERE REALLY IS A SHANGRI LA. For any of you "young" enough to remember the old Ronald Coleman film Lost Horizon. Chantrelle Schram, one of Jeanne and John Ramsay's five granddaughters discovered its beauty at 11,000 feet near the Tibet border on her recent tour of China. IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL DAY ATTHE LONG ISLAND YACHT CLUB when they celebrated their 40th anniversary carnival weekend events. Two indefatigable ladies have to be applauded for their work: Linda Bias, commodore and swim team chairlady and the Club's steward Doreen DeKleine. Their devotion to detail was shown by all the smiles on all the kids' faces as they enjoyed all the fun games, rides and fabulous food. Sailing Chairman Kevin Lambert and Tennis Chairlady Cindi Lanigan gave out the welldeserved awards. All agreed, it's been a great 50 years.
SIXTEEN YEARS OF SERVING NOURISHING MEALS TO THE COMMUNITY. The First Presbyterian Church Meal Program entered its 16th year on August 16. Hot meals are served every Thursday at 6 p.m. Take outs are available for shut ins if prearranged by calling Gil Schlerf at 631-587-5837. Our congrats to this wonderful group for the great job they've been doing for the past 16 years. This is volunteerism at its very best.
