Math, Science and Technology Fair held at Captree Elementary At the MST (Math, Science and Technology) Fair at Captree Elementary School in West Islip, coordinators Joann Niesen, Rochelle Blumling and Justin DeMaio displayed the hard work their students put forth and also thanked teacher Judith Schwartz for her assistance. Exhibits included a fifth grade project to design a house that would withstand a category 5 hurricane and student Alyssa Bove's "Monkey Bizness" project. Alyssa's hypothesis that monkeys exhibit human like behavior was based on her research at the Bronx Zoo. Using an Ethogram, she detailed their behavior, eye contact, communication and grooming. Included in her work was a report on the India Train Company's hiring of people to work subways in Thailand to scare away monkeys who frightened passengers. Daniel Vasquez's project, dedicated to his dog Frances Gravy, was a show stopper and surprised no one when he announced he has applied for a patent on his invention. Frances Gravy suffered from a very bad case of arthritis in her rear legs and as she deteriorated had to be held up and supported to drink and eat. Daniel invented a machine that raised and lowered the animal after visiting several pet stores and discovering that no one carried a product to assist animals who were hurt in accidents or born disabled.
Daniel's beloved pet died on March 10. He's asking classmates to come up with a name for his invention.
