Joseph Bonnett, retired Suffolk County police detective Joseph J. Bonnett, a retired Suffolk County Police detective and veteran, died July 6, 2007 at the age of 76. Born May 4, 1931, Mr. Bonnett spent the majority of his life in Bay Shore, before moving to West Islip 17 years ago. Mr.Bonner was a detective in Suffolk' s 3rd Precinct and served the department for 20 years before retiring. Prior to that he served in the U.S. Army infantry during the Korean War. Mr. Bonnett was remembered by his wife of 17 years, Mary, as "a man well loved by everyone he knew." He loved the outdoors, was a dedicated family man and enjoyed boating and fishing. He also spent time enjoying a round of golf at the Brentwood Country Club. He also spent a lot of time at Kismet on Fire Island as well as travelling to Florida with his wife. "He was always there for everyone," said his stepson Richard Walsh of Lindenhurst, who went on to describe how his stepfather, nicknamed B.B. was always there for those who needed him. In addition to his stepson Richard and his wife Mary, Mr. Bonnett is survived by his children Joseph Jr. and wife Denise, of Bath, Maine, Kathy Walsh of Elmira, New York, and by Richard's wife Kim. His grandchildren Rebecca, Cassandra, Everett, also survive him. A grandson Ryan predeceased him.
Mr. Bonnett reposed at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip. Funeral services- during which many of his relatives wore red in tribute to his long-held affection for the color- were held on July 10 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Bay Shore. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, Bay Shore.
