Clayton Fountain, resident of Bay Shore

According to his daughter, Clayton Fountain loved best to chat with his Bay Shore neighbors and passersby. In fact, he was called the "mayor" of Asharoken Boulevard by those who knew and loved him.

Clayton Fountain, 84, who died July 29, 2007, after having just received one of his proudest accomplishments in June, his high school diploma.

"He went to war, like many of the kids did back then, and got busy working and raising a family," explained his daughter, Carol.

Born in Massachusetts, he moved to Bay Shore when he was two months old and never wanted to leave. He lived in Bay Shore for 57 years, served proudly during World War II and retired from UnionLocals 807 and 202, as a truck driver . For 18 years, he was a friendly, familiar face at the Mobil Gas Station in Bay Shore where he worked.

Mr. Fountain leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Harriet; his daughter: Carol Rawson and her husband Bill; his grandchildren: Lisa Starke and Gregory Rawson and his wife Candy; his great grandchildren: Morgan, Justin, Tristen, Robert and Madison; and many friends who called him "Papa." He was predeceased by his sons, Clayton, Jr. and Harold.

He reposed at the Overton Funeral Home, Islip, on July 31, 2007. A Funeral Mass was held at the funeral home on August 1, 2007 followed by interment in the L.I. National Cemetery at Pinelawn.
