St. Joseph's CYO Track Team competes in Long Island Championships; Speedy Soles win 6 titles at June 17 meet

With a record number of young athletes, St. Joseph's CYO track team competed in the CYO Nassau-Suffolk Track Championship Meet on June 17 at the Mitchell Field Sports Complex in Uniondale.

Newly nicknamed "The Speedy Soles, the team from Babylon fielded 38 participants in grades one through eight from 10 area towns, nearly 80 percent of its members, who competed for championship honors in 33 track and field events. The Soles made their best season-finale showing ever, winning six championship titles and taking five second-place medals and five third-place medals.

The Long Island CYO Championship Meet annually gathers qualifiers from 22 participating track programs in parishes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. These programs give youngsters in grades one through eight the opportunity to compete within their age groups in a full slate of running events and relays, from the 60- meter dash to the mile run, as well as field events like the long jump and shot put.

St. Joseph's athletes won the right to compete at the L.I. Championships in one of three regional qualifying meets held in May. At each meet, the three best performers in each event moved on to the finals.

Qualifying for St. Joseph's and competing in the Championships were: Katherine Busher of Babylon, first grade; Thomas Caligiuri of Babylon, first grade; Asiah Smikle of Bay Shore, first grade; Salvatore Jones of Lindenhurst, first grade; Christiana Coolbaugh of Brightwaters, first grade; Grace Shapiro of West Islip, second grade; Kevin Buser of Babylon, second grade; Lauren Swanson of Brightwaters, second grade; Nicholas Cimaszewski of Babylon, second grade; Italee Smikle of Bay Shore, third grade; Breanna Kuhner of Babylon, third grade; Meaghan Pashen of Babylon, third grade; Katlyn Coolbaugh of Brightwaters, third grade; Jack Corcoran of Babylon, third grade and Wendy Tully-Gustafson of Islip, third grade.

Also competing were: Ronnie Pashen of Babylon, fourth grade; Jordan Lang of West Babylon, fourth grade; Kyle Buser of Babylon, fourth grade; Luciano Fiore of Brightwaters, fourth grade; Clare McCaffrey of Babylon, fourth grade; RJ Squicciarini of Bay Shore, fifth grade; Joey Randazzo of West Islip, fifth grade; Charley Folz of West Islip, fifth grade; David Lipsky of East Islip, sixth grade; Liam Anderson of North Babylon, sixth grade; Dan McCarthy of Great River, sixth grade; Peter Zeph of East Islip, sixth grade; Paolo Fiore of Brightwaters, sixth grade and Mikey Vindell of Babylon, sixth grade.

In addition, other competitors were Cathy Sullivan of Bay Shore, seventh grade; Kathleen Quinn of West Islip, seventh grade; Jessica Boden of West Islip, eighth grade; Danielle Lang of West Babylon, eighth grade; Olivia Fiore of Brightwaters, eighth grade; Grace Hoffman of Babylon, eighth grade; Elizabeth Sutton of West Islip, eighth grade; Victoria Folz of West Islip, eighth grade and John Quartararo of West Islip, eighth grade.

Title-winning performances were turned in by: Asiah Smikle, winner, first-grade girls' 80-meter dash, in 14.5 second; Luciano Fiore, winner, fourth-grade boys' 200- meter dash, in 32.8 seconds; Paolo Fiore, repeat winner, sixth-grade boys' 800-meter run, in two minutes, 43.3 seconds, fast time of the Championships, all grades; David Lipsky, winner, sixth-grade boys' mile, in 5 minutes, 46.1 seconds; John Quartararo, repeat winner, eighth-grade boys' 400-meter dash in 60.8 seconds, fastest time of the Championships, all grades. Also winning a championship title, and capping an undefeated CYO season, was the fourth-grade boys' 4x100-meter relay of Kyle Busser, Luciano Fiore, Ronnie Pashen and Jordan Lang, time in 65.5 seconds.

St. Joseph's CYOT rack is coached by Jess Prochilo and Fred Bertino and assisted by Rachel Adams, Joe Bertino, Mary Corcoran, Estelle Culpepper, Eric Lipsky, Laura Prochilo, Luis Smikle, Andrew Strauch, Christopher Sullivan, Patrick Sullivan and Elizabeth Vaughan. The team coordinator is Kathy Hoffman.
