New state law will save lives Dear Editor: The use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) when a person is suffering a cardiac emergency can mean the difference between life and death and every second counts. It is vital for first responders, medical professionals and qualified good Samaritans to be able to easily and quickly locate these lifesaving devices in an emergency. That's why I am pleased to announce that New York State has a new law, which I sponsored, that requires a sign be posted in the main entrance of buildings and facilities indicating the location of an AED. New York already requires all schools, stateowned and operated buildings and health clubs to maintain an AED and to have at least one employee who is trained in its use. Since the law requiring AEDSs in schools was enacted, 36 cardiac arrest victims have been saved by a defibrillator. While a staff person at a school, state building or health club will know the location of the AED at that facility, another qualified rescuer, for instance an off-duty physician, EMT or AED qualified sports coach, who may need to use the equipment in an emergency, may not know the location. This new law will ensure that the equipment can be located easily when people are under pressure and can help to save more lives. Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr.
