George W. Gehrlein, longtime Copiague resident In 1956, Walter Gehrlein moved to Copiague when the community was still connected by dirt roads. He lived in a home his family built, and spent his life caring and providing for and enjoying his family. George W. Gehrlein died on July 8, 2007. He was 88 years-old. His daughter Charlene remembers her father as a caring family man who was always there for his children and for his wife. "He was a good father and a good provider," she said. "And he spent a lot of time with us. We took yearly family vacations." Last year Mr. Gehrlein and his wife Louise were able to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Mr. Gehrlein was a machinist on the Long Island Rail Road and spent several years as a Merchant Marine. He attended the Simpson United Methodist Church in Amityville, volunteering at the Church's annual fairs and other events. "He was a man who loved his family and did what he was supposed to do," said his daughter. In addition to his daughter Charlene, and his wife Louse, Mr. Gehrlein is is survived by his other children: George J., and Sharon Hart; daughter-in-law Karen and son-in-law Ronald and his grandchildren, Amy DeJongh, George Gehrlein, Jr.; Jeff Gehrlein, Ron Hart and Brian Hart. His great-grandchildren, Alicia, Jessica, Jamie, Kaitlyn and Jason also survive him.
Mr. Gehrlein reposed at D'Andrea Brothers Funeral Home, 99 Oak Street, Copiague. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Kew Gardens, Queens.
