KIC applauds community

The Town of Islip entered the warm weather months cleaner and greener with more than 18 tons of litter and debris removed from local communities thanks to volunteers who participated in the 2007 Great American Cleanup sponsored by Keep Islip Clean (KIC).

By the time the last trash bag was collected, more than 1,600 volunteers worked approximately 4,600 hours removing 36,250 pounds of litter and debris throughout Islip Township. The event, which takes place annually between March 1st and May 31st, is KIC's contribution to the signature program of Keep America Beautiful (KAB). KIC, an affiliate of KAB, sponsors and organizes Town of Islip volunteers who join the estimated three million individuals across the nation picking up millions of pounds of litter every year.

The Great American Cleanup (GAC) brings together diverse groups and individuals with the common goal of living in a clean and beautiful community. And true to the spirit of community service, these volunteers transformed concern into positive action, making a significant contribution to the quality of life in Islip.

They were supported in their efforts by donations from local sponsors including Pepsi Bottling Ventures, LLC, Entenmann's Bakery, The Home Depot, and Hunt Enterprises, Inc. owner of several local McDonald's franchises. The Glad Products Company, a national sponsor of the GAC, provided GLAD® ForceFlex™ Trash Bags to help make the event a success.

"We had a series of important cleanups this year and I hope to build on that. We're in the process of forming KIC Clean Teams made up of volunteers who choose an area within their community each month that's in need of cleanup," said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC. "These teams will target problem areas, which will make a big difference in the health and beauty of our local environment," she added.

Please call the KIC Office at 224-2627 to find out how you can join a KIC Clean Team in your community.
