North Babylon's Marion G. Vedder School celebrates 75 years of serving local children

Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in North Babylon opened its doors in 1932, an event that was celebrated in May as the school reached the milestone of serving students and the community for 75 years.

The celebration began with music as the North Babylon High School Marching Band gave a rousing performance, which was followed by the flag team. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Children's Garden was also a feature of the event.

Each grade contributed their talent to the success of the celebration. The 5th grade students created a mural by painting the Marion G. Vedder School crest, which includes a Knight in Shining Armor, a teddy bear, a rose, a school house, a lamp and a bluebird. The mural hangs at the entrance of the school as a reminder of how the students and faculaty came together to create a memborable 75th anniversary celebration.

The 4th grade students acted out biographies of the former leaders of the school, including William B. Hartley, James Northrop, Marion G. Vedder, Joyce Brott, Peter C. Steck, and the school's current principal Kerry J. Larke.

The teachers put together an anniversary quilt, using the 2007 class pictures as the centerpiece. It was donated by the Fink Family, and is displayed in the main hallway.

The fouth grades continued their efforts by creating school supply boxes and donated them to the St. Joseph's Outreach Center.

The third grade students also pitched in, purchasing light bulbs and donating them to St. Joseph's Outreach Center.

Second graders purchased books, wrapped and donated them to the school and North Babylon Library. First graders purchased rose bushes and donated them to to Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home, while the school's kindergaten students purchased teddy bears, wrapped and donated them to the Pediatric Wing of Good Samaritan Hospital.

The students didn't stop at that. In the month of April, students volunteered to be journalists and interviewed former teachers, staff, and students. These interviews were compiled onto a DVD, which can be found at the school library.

In addition to student, staff and alumni, the event was attended by local officials. The school also re- ceived congratulations in letters from President George Bush, Governor Eliot Spitzer, Senator Charles Schumer, and Senator Hillary Clinton.

"Thank you to all who contributed to make this occassion a memorable experience for all alumni and present staff and stidemts," said Larke.
