Embattled WISD health teacher's tenure to come before school board again in August After conducting an investigation that included interviewing students, West Islip school district officials said they see no reason why a teacher, who parents had criticized for inappropriate behavior in the classroom, should not receive tenure. A resolution to do that is scheduled to be put on the August agenda. That teacher, Nicole Perperis, is slated to begin teaching in the High School, but had been teaching at the Beach Street Middle School this year. Parents complained that Perperis, who was a health teacher there, used explicit language and drawings to describe sexual acts to her students. Some parents said she dressed up in costumes as part of her instructional course. As a result, her tenure appointment was tabled at a meeting in June. A mother of two students in Perperis' class said it was "criminal" that the district is moving her up when she should have been fired, and that the parents of students in her class last year should be interviewed as well. District officials said that their investigation was comprehensive and that nothing untoward was uncovered. "We delayed her tenure until the process was complete and this fall she will be working in the High School," said Nancy Lenz, a spokeswoman for the district. "If parents are still concerned or have more information they should be calling the superintendents office directly."
The superintendent, Dr. Beth Virginia Blau, can be reached at 631-893-3200.
