Senior citizens task force hearing held at West Islip Community Center

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington, 16th LD), Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, recently presided over the fourth and final public hearing of the County-wide Senior Citizens Task Force at West Islip Community Center.

Chairman Stern's vision for the task force has been to address issues facing older adults including affordable housing, more accessible transportation and an increased need for long-term care services and to answer one critical question, "Is it good to grow old in Suffolk County?"

More than 75 seniors attended the hearing to voice their concerns regarding the present and future needs of seniors in Suffolk County.

Others who testified included Islip Supervisor Phil Nolan; Bruce Blower, Director, Suffolk County Office of Handicapped Services; Roberta Monat, National Association of Social Workers; Eileen M. Verity, Catholic Charities; George Roach, Esq., Legal Aid Society, Senior Citizen Division; Laurette Mulry, Esq., Legal Aid Society, Senior Citizen Division; Elizabeth A. Geary, Day Haven Adult Day Services; Ellen Eichelbaum, The Speakeasy Group.

George Roach spoke about the need to protect electronic Social Security Direct Deposits in senior's checking accounts.

Bruce Blower suggested five areas of concern that would benefit from a more cohesive and collaborative effort, including using state funding to assist disabled seniors in making their homes accessible, assessment tools for care plan development, case management/ care coordination, changing demographics and transportation.

The Task Force will submit a written report of its findings and determinations together with its recommendations for action to the County Legislature and the County Executive.
