Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

ANOTHER HIT SHOW FOR THE CONKLIN HOUSE. Yes, last weekend Villagers enjoyed a very successful art and decoy show at the historic old house. Many art lovers were on hand for the reception on Friday evening where wine and cheese were served. Then on Saturday and Sunday afternoons the show was open to the public again. Kathy Herzey greeted all comers from her perch on the porch where she was in the process of painting a picture for a lucky raffle winner. There are two winners of her beautiful paintings so far: Bob Norman and Jean Ann Gottsch, with two more to come next weekend. Norm Aripotch did a superb job of assembling the large number of carvings which were beautifully arranged and displayed by Karen Petz and Larry Nye. Many familiar names, some from years ago were represented - E. Clayton Smith's large collection was on display, thanks to his son, the Village's indispensable man, "Skip Gardner." Joe Young's beautiful carvings of shore birds are a sight to behold. (Many of us are lucky to have one of these treasures in our homes. Other old familiar names at the show were the Thorne's of Amityville, Eddie O'Connor and AlRollman. Remember Alec Warts? He was a well-known bayman and man about town. you'll see his photo displayed among the carvings. Don't worry if you missed the show last weekend. You can come next weekend, same days, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Two more paintings will be raffled off, and Chuck Pfannkuchen of our Sanitation Department who loves to carve will be in the barn showing his skills next weekend. So, come on down.

FIFTY YEARS TOGETHER. Congrats to Kate and Dick Patwell who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a party for their fam- ily and friends held at the West Islip Beach House. Kate and Dick are longtime West Islip residents. Their five children and many grandchildren and nieces and nephews all celebrated the very happy occasion with them on July 7. We wish them many more happy years together.

SUMMER VISITORS. Robin and Greg Maya with their children, Nicholas and "Luli" flew in from Los Angeles to spend several days visiting with Robin's parents, Fran and Bob Pasch last week before leaving for Point O' Woods where they plan to spend the month of August.

NEW BOOK OF LOCAL INTEREST. Dr. Jean Addington is writing a book about C.B.J. Snyder, a New York City architect and the Superintendent of School Buildings in New York City. It' s of interest to us because Mr. Snyder was grandfather to local residents Shirley Skeffington and Libby Orr. Mr. Snyder designed approximately 500 school buildings and over 200 are still in use. Shirley and Libby recently toured several, including Morris High School in the Bronx together with Dr. Addington, providing the author with valuable information about their grandfather who resided on Araca Road in Babylon Village.

NEW HONORS FOR DR. JOHN MAYER the husband of Christine Rendich, whose mother Peg Rendich lives in Babylon Village. Dr. Mayer received the award of the Tommy Kaplan Chair in Cardiovascular Studies at a recent ceremony. Dr. Mayer received his M.D. degree from Yale University Medical School. He is a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and is a senior associate in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Children's Hospital in Boston. He and his wife live in Wellsley, Massachusetts and have three children.
