West Babylon High Schoolers dominate Russian Olympiada
5 students win medals at elite competition

Six West Babylon High School students competed in the prestigious 2007 Olympiada of Spoken Russian hosted by the American Council of Teachers of Russian. The participants were students from the 10th and 11th grades who demonstrated exceptional skill in Ms. Lisa Schlor's Russian class and five of the six were awarded medals.

The Olympiada consists of 120 handpicked students from all over the State of New York. Brian Hicks, Stephanie Kane, and Skyla Lilly of West Babylon were part of the Intermediate Level and Nicole Bouranis, Alanna McGovern, and Allison Regan - also of West Babylon - were as- signed to the Advanced Class.

Allison Regan won a Silver Medal; Alanna McGovern the Bronze; Nicole Bouranis received the Bronze; Skyla Lilly was awarded a Bronze; and Stephanie Kane took Bronze home, as well. Brian Hicks was given an Honorable Mention Certificate for his work.

The Olympiada is composed of three designated categories where students display their adeptness with the Russian language: Personal Conversation, Culture and History, and Literature. It is a full day of academic competition for scholarships, awards, and general recognition of excellence.
