Babylon: My Very Favorite Place
BY HENRY BROCK

The following essay was written by Henry Brock, the grandson of Dick and Joan Crockett of Babylon. He wrote it while attending third grade at Carrboro Elementary School in North Carolina and received a first-place ribbon for the essay from the Carrboro PTA. His family said that his love for Babylon was influenced by his "Poppy" Dick Crockett, who always had such love and praise for his beloved Babylon Village.

One of my very favorite places is Babylon, New York. Babylon is special to me because a lot of my family lives there, one of my best friends lives there and we go there every summer, and that is where I was born.

My mom was born there and her mom still lives in the house that she grew up in. It's an awesome house because they have a big screen TV, a huge basement to play in, a pool, swings and a basketball hoop. My aunt, uncle and my three cousins also live in Babylon. My cousins are all younger than me, but we all have so much fun when we get together. I also have many other relatives that live there. One of them is my Aunt Beth. She is so much fun and I especially love when her boyfriend comes to visit from Australia.

TJ Riegelhaupt is one of my closest friends. We met when we were two years old. My mom says we hit it off right away because we both had baby sisters, both loved dinosaurs and both enjoyed sports. When we were three, we were in the same preschool class. Each time I visit Babylon TJ and I hang out. He'll come to my grandmother's house, we'll have sleepovers. I'll go to his soccer games and sometimes we'll go to the movies. I know he'll always be one of my best friends.

Trips to Babylon in the summer are the best. On the 4th of July, our entire extended family plays an annual softball game. Some years, there are fifty kids and adults playing. I like it because I get to hit a lot and play the field with my Uncle Gary.

Summers there are also awesome because of our trips to Fire Island. We have to take a ferry to get there, and there are no cars. All there is is beach, boardwalk and sunshine. My whole family loves it there!

Babylon is where I was born and it will always be a special place for me. All of my memories of my Pop are from there. I can visit him at the cemetery in Babylon. He was also born there and it is a very special place to him.

Babylon is my very favorite place.
