West Islip High School teacher selected as the Suffolk County Math Teacher of the Year

West Islip High School teacher Melissa Kennedy has been selected as the Suffolk County Math Teacher of the Year for 2007. The announcement was made by the Suffolk County Math Teachers' Association (SCMTA), a non-profit affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, which works to advance methods of teaching math and disperses information pertaining to mathematics education. Kennedy was selected based on her knowledge of the subject matter, her relationship with students and colleagues, and events that have demonstrated that she is unique as an educator. She has been teaching for 33 years, 31 of which have been in West Islip.

"I really love teaching math," she says, "and when my students respond to my enthusiasm for the subject, it makes all my efforts worthwhile." Recently, a

former student who is now a colleague, told her that notes she saved from her pre-calculus class in high school helped her in her college courses "These words of gratitude and thanks," continues Kennedy, "are like precious gems that I store away to give me the extra boost I sometimes need to keep trying." As for the new award, she adds, "I am truly grateful."
