Babylon resident joins the Peace Corps in Mauritania
Wyllie departed for Mauritania on June 26 and is now entering training to become a small business development Peace Corps Volunteer. Wyllie's work will involve collaborating with local cooperatives, helping them to emerge into the private sector of the Mauritanian economy. A graduate of Babylon Jr./Sr. High School, Wyllie attended American University in Washington, D.C., and earned a bachelor's degree in international relations, graduating in 2006. Wyllie previously worked at the Foreign Service Institute. "I've had this itch to join the Peace Corps for awhile," said Wyllie. "I'm looking forward to an overblown sense of adventure." During the first three months of her service, Wyllie will live with a host family in Wyllie to become fully immersed in the country's language and culture. After acquiring the language and cultural skills necessary to assist her community, Wyllie will serve for two years in Wyllie, living in a manner similar to people in her host country. Wyllie joins the 413 New York residents currently serving in the Peace Corps. More than 11,624 New York residents have served in the Peace Corps since 1961.
Now in its third program since 1967, Peace Corps has sent more than 1,100 Volunteers to the western African country of Mauritania. V
