Police seek public's help in local bank robbery

A man walked into the Chase Bank in Deer Park, shortly after 11 a.m., Thursday, July 5 and handed the bank's assistant manager a note. The note said that there was a remote controlled bomb hidden in the bank and threatened that he would detonate it unless he was given a specific amount of cash.

Before the assistant manager could comply with the robber's demands, he fled the bank, heading north toward Carll's Path. Police are asking anyone with infomation about this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.

Suffolk County Police Department Major Case Investigations Unit detectives are investigating the attempted bank robbery at the bank at 5 Grand Boulevard.

First Precinct patrol officers arrived at the scene, evacuated the bank, and requested the Emergency Services bomb technicians and the Canine bomb detector dog to respond. After checking the interior and perimeter of the bank, no device was found.

The robber is described as a white man in his 50s, 5-foot-11 inches to 6-feet tall with a stocky build and a reddish-blonde beard and mustache. He was wearing a dark, navy blue suit with a white shirt and tie, black sneakers and a dark colored cloth wrapped around his head.

In related matters, Suffolk County Police are investigating two bank robbers that occurred in the Babylon Town area last week.

The first incident occurred at the Ridgewood Savings Bank, 317 South Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst, June 18, 2007. Police said that at approximately 12:15 p.m.that day a man entered the bank and approached a teller with a note demanding cash. He then displayed a silver colored handgun to reinforce his demands. The teller complied with the robber 's de- mands and gave him cash. She also gave him a dye pack from the drawer. The robber left the bank and the dye pack activated. A motorist observing the red smoke from the dye pack followed the robber on East Gates Ave. and then to South First Street where the robber entered a red Mazda.

The robber is described as a white male with tan skin, about 35 years old, 5 feet10 inches to 6 feet tall with a thin to medium build and dark hair. He was wearing a white baseball cap with red colored writing on top, white shorts with red stripes on the side, white sneakers, and sunglasses with metal rims. The robber may have red dye stained hands.

The second incident occurred the next day at approximately 10:30 a.m., at the North Fork Bank, located at 1383 Deer Park Ave., North Babylon. In that incident a man entered the bank and immediately pulled a black bandana over his face. He then approached the teller station and verbally demanded that the bank employees fill a plastic bag with cash. The tellers complied, giving the robber cash from their drawers. The robber exited via the rear door of the bank and was last seen on Spruce Street.

The robber is described as a black male with a dark complexion, in his late 20s to early 30s, and approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a muscular build. He was wearing a dark-colored baseball cap with a gold logo, a black bandana, blue jeans and white sneakers.

The two cases are under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
