Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

ONE OF THE BEST EVER The All Village celebration last Sunday afternoon attracted a large group of residents to honor the volunteer of the year, Mary Ellen Sullivan who has been involved in so many worthwhile causes in the Village over the years, some of them with her late husband, Tom Sullivan.

Everyone raved about the food. The local restaurants had something for everyone's palate - delicious seafood of every description, and always a big hit, the "baby" lamb chops from Lenny's Meat Market cooked to perfection. The desserts were mind boggling and were served in the Conklin House after the buffet. Not only were they beautiful to the eye, but they were delicious too. The white tent and all of the decorations looked fabulous, thanks to the Rohl girls and their grandmother, Linn, who always works so hard every year.

Outgoing chairman of the Awards Committee Bob Pasch, who has served with such distinction over the years, turned the gavel over to Betty Siegel, who has taken over the important post. Bob was awarded a certificate acknowledging his hard work for the Conklin House. Of course Mayor Ralph Scordino was there and his parents Marge and Ralph Scordino saw the members of the Board of Trustees Alice Vanderveldt, Tony Davida, Debbie Basile and Kevin Muldowny. It was nice to chat with Judge Patrick Henry. Saw his son Councilman Lindsay Henry with his little daughter. Also got to chat with Joe Leone and hear him sing to the music of the banjo players, (Joe has a great voice.) Hadn't seen Blake and Michelle Gilmore for years. They flew here from California and are on their way for a visit with Blake's brothers Bob and his family and David and his family up in Vermont. Always on the best dressed list, Jeanne Ramsey looked terrific, as did all of the gals "under the tent." We give the party highest marks in every category. Congratulations to all and especially the co-chairman Alice Vanderveldt, Karen Petz and Debbie Basile. Next week: we'll have the lucky prize winners.

AND SPEAKING OF PARTIES. Don't forget next week on July 18th, the Chamber of Commerce will honor the Beacon at a party at the Venetian Yacht Club. Here is your chance to thank them for all of their public service to our community. We need our local paper, just as we need our local stores and shops. So come out to show your support and enjoy cocktails and dinner with our local merchants and the staff of the Beacon. Call Donna Consola at 631-587-5612 for details. Hope to see you there.

WAS SORRY TO HEAR of the passing of former resident Betty Rogers who died in Florida last week. Betty and her husband Jack had lived here in Argyle Park some years ago with their family. Services were held in Florida and burial was on Long island.

IT WAS CELEBRATION TIME for the Welling family last week in Spain when the Swiss ship "Alinghi" won the America's cup after winning five races to two. He started his career as a sailor on the Great South Bay.; Matthew had a tremendous amount of support from the Welling family members who flew to Spain for the big event. Among those who were in Spain to cheer him on were his mother Suzanne Steinberg and her husband Paul, his uncle Patrick and his wife Debbie and daughter Christine of Babylon, his uncle Paul and his family of Florida and his brother Peter Welling of Bayport.
