Legislation passed to reduce toxic exposure Suffolk County

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington) 16th LD applauds passage of his legislation establishing a "Safe and Sustainable Procurement Policy" that will require Suffolk County to consider public health and environmental considerations when purchasing items such as paper products, automotive maintenance products, paints and other items that may be potentially toxic. The bill will help to reduce or eliminate carcinogens and other potentially hazardous products from being used by the county. "It is critical to work to reduce exposure to products that may cause cancer, which unfortunately, is at epidemic levels in Suffolk County," Legislator Stern said. "I am proud to have worked with my colleagues in the Legislature, the County Executives office and wonderful community advocacy groups, such as the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition, to reach an agreement that will protect the health of Suffolk County residents now and into the future."

Suffolk County is one of the first counties in the nation to address the issue of toxic exposure and to adopt a policy that will take public health into consideration when purchasing decisions are made. Cities such as New York, Seattle and San Francisco have passed such legislation and once again Suffolk County is in the vanguard in protecting public health and safety. "I applaud the bi-partisan commitment of Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Legislators Stern and Romaine for working together for the common good and taking the lead in going green" said Karen Joy Miller of the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition.
