Legislator D'Amaro calls attention to critical deadline for Ground Zero recovery participants to register for future benefits

Suffolk County Legislator Lou D'Amaro (D-North Babylon) would like to call the public's attention to an upcoming deadline for Ground Zero workers to register for future benefits. All individuals who participated in rescue, recovery or clean-up operations at the World Trade Center site, Fresh Kills Landfill, New York City Morgue or temporary morgues and barges in Lower Manhattan between September 11, 2001 and September 12, 2002 are urged to register with the State of New York Worker's Compensation Board to preserve their rights to recover medical benefits and lost wages for any future illness which may result from exposure to toxins at those locations. Participants include both volunteers and those who were present in the course of their employment. The World Trade Center site is defined as "anywhere below a line starting from the Hudson River and Canal Street, east on Canal Street to Pike Street, south on Pike Street to the East River and extending to the lower tip of Manhattan."

It is critical that all those who are eligible register, even if they have already registered, been denied or are receiving compensation for a September 11th related injury or illness, or even if they are not presently ill. In order to recover for any latent, or future illness, participants must register to preserve their rights to recover for any illness that may occur in the future.

"This deadline is fast approaching," said Legislator D'Amaro. "It is extremely vital that those who so bravely responded in the aftermath of 9/11 make certain that they are protected against potential illness by registering with the Workers' Compensation Board."

"Hundreds of volunteers from Suffolk County selflessly served in the aftermath of September 11th," added D'Amaro. "We need to get the word out because we don't want this deadline to pass without doing all we could possibly do to notify the brave men and women who served as volunteers or workers during one of the most traumatic times in our nation's history."

Applications must contain detailed information and notarized affidavits, so it is important to begin the process immediately.

The deadline for registering with the Workers Compensation Board is August 14. Participants must file a WTC-12 form. Forms for registering with the Workers Compensation Board are available at www.nycosh.org.
