West Islip student is Scholastic Kid reporter

West Islip's Oquenock Elementary school fifth grader Michael Carboni is a Scholastic Kids Press Corps member. The West Islip youngster will be covering stories for Scholastic News Online and Scholastic Magazines for grades one to eight. His assignments may include interviewing local officials, attending special events and/or reporting reactions to breaking news from classmates or community members. His teacher is Patricia Heaton. When asked about the importance of this selection, he responded by saying he plans to become a reporter for the YES TV channel where he hopes to cover his favorite team, the Yankees. Recently, Cablevision sent a news crew to film and interview the boy. In attendance was Jennifer Boggs of Scholastic News corporate communications, who explained that in this national publication, Michael will be explaining the contemporary world to students. The Scholastic News Program has 75 student-reporters across the country. Michael's mom, Jeanne Carboni, says the youngster is an avid reader. Principal Michelle D'Amour says he's an excellent student. Michael's most recent interview for the magazine was with Suffolk County Police Anti-Bias Unit coordinator, Det. Sgt. Robert Reecks.
