Robert Frost students in Deer Park get cozy with creatures
Shown in the photo are seventh graders in Dean Militello's science class at Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park displaying their "creatures" project. The students are learning about metamorphosis and how to classify organisms based on their physical characteristics. Through this hands-on activity, the students built their observation skills as related to the state middle school science standards. "It is very important for students to participate in as many hands-on activities as possible, although the New York State test in science isn't until eighth grade," noted Militello. "These type of lessons that encourage high levels of student involvement usually result in a better understanding of what was taught and a greater ability to retain what was learned. What was really exciting is that many of the students were unaware just how many of these creatures actually exist in their own backyard.
