Levy should not let bullies push the people of Suffolk around

Communists, Fascists and other repressive governments throughout history have used guns and the military to avoid the will of the people. In this country, the weapon of choice has become the mighty dollar.

Case in point. A coalition of Black and Hispanic Albany lawmakers are threatening to hold up a piece of legislation that would extend Suffolk County's 1 percent sales tax. Without shame, they have said the move is designed specifically to coerce S.C. Leg. Steve Levy into opening a facility for day laborers in the county, a move he and the majority of his constituents have resisted.

We say, hang tough Mr. County Executive, and do not bend to this kind of monetary terrorism. It's an abomination.

These lawmakers know that the decision about such a facility and many others like it fall squarely within the realm of local control. To attempt to circumvent this Constitutionally authorized separation is nothing short of the haughty arrogance that has overtaken Washington. Instead of listening to the people for a sense of how to conduct themselves, many lawmakers, at all levels, have worked primarily to preserve their own power bases.

The people of Suffolk County see a difference between legal and illegal immigration, despite the semantics in Albany and in Washington. That distinction means something to them in terms of fairness, equity, justice and national security. These three state officials are nothing more than schoolyard bullies who should be dumped from office.
