Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

TRAVELERS ARE BACK IN TOWN. Joan and Bud St. John flew out to California for the graduation of their grandson, Gregory Auer from Santa Cruz High School last week. Greg's parents, Barbara and Arthur and his paternal grandparents were also at the graduation ceremonies. Greg will be attending the University of Idaho on a golf scholarship where he will be studying golf management and playing Division 1 golf. The program is sponsored by the P.G.A. at colleges throughout the country. Greg was a valued member of the Santa Cruz High School golf team. Nancy Grover DeChatrette flew back from Seattle, Washington last weekend after a visit with her daughter Stephanie DeChatrette who is studying for a master's degree in child psychology at the University of Seattle. Nancy flew home a day early to surprise her father Jim Grover for Father's Day, just in time for the annual brunch at the Babylon Yacht Club. Stephanie and her parents Nancy and Terry DeChatrette live in Connecticut.

COME CELEBRATE WITH US. The Beacon Newspaper has served the local community since 1966 and now it's give back time. The Chamber of Commerce will honor the Beacon on Wednesday, July 18th at the Venetian Yacht Club. This is also a fundraiser for the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce whose many merchants have supported our local organizations throughout the Village by donating numerous raffle prizes for fundraising efforts. You're sure to spot lots of familiar faces among the invited guests, past and present employees and of course, our publisher and editor Al and Carolyn James. Even the Grapevine will be on hand. So come on down to meet and greet us. Enjoy a cocktail hour, gourmet dinner, dessert and much more. Tickets are $55 per person. We look forward to seeing you there. For more information call Donna Consola 631-587-5612.

NEXT STEP. If no settlement is reached between Babylon Village and the workers, the negotiations will go to a New York State fact finder. Talked to Mayor Ralph Scordino last week who hoped for an agreement soon. "Everyone wants a settlement as soon as possible, the Village and the workers," he said.

THERE'S A NEW SIGN up at the Fred Shores Beach Club. The club looks terrific this year, all spruced up, with lovely plantings, sturdy play equipment for the kids, etc. Saw something very interesting - a sign on the east gate in front of the club which reads, "The Frederick family gifted this beach club to our community in 1942."

IF YOU LIKE MUSIC AND WHO DOESN'T? Come to the free concert under the tent to kick off the All-Village Celebration on Saturday, July 7, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Three of the five members of the band are old time Babylon boys - Andy McCaslin, Tommy Lefever and Kevin (Booie) Lewis. The concert is sponsored by the Babylon Village Arts Council. What a great weekend it's going to be in our community.

BEWARE OF SCAM ARTISTS. We have several friends who have been taken in by "fundraisers" for charitable causes, and or major renovations on their homes. In one case, a very attractive lady collected $40 for school books for needy school children; in another, a large sum as a down payment was colleced at the door for a home repair - who knows whether it was necessary or not. Fortunately, the home owner was able to stop the transaction in time. But when they knock on your door, be sure to check for proper identification. Better still, don't answer if you don't know them.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF MARRIAGE.

Shown in the photo below are Sally and Ted Shiebler surrounded by their family, Amy and Carl David, Sheila and Timothy Shiebler, Debbie and Jonathan Shiebler and Christopher Sheibler, who brought them ceremonial leis from Hawaii. Following a week long cruise to the Mexican Riviera given by their adult children, Sally and Ted have returned to their home on Captree Island.
