Herta Wagner: 50-year Babylon Village resident, and local realtor
by Tiffany Elliott

Longtime Babylon Village resident and realtor Herta Wagner died June 5, 2007 surrounded by family at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home in West Islip. She was 79-years old and was considered somewhat of a pioneer when she combined the responsibilities of family and career at a time when most women worked only in the home.

While raising her three daughters, she worked as a secretary for Southold Corporation and later for more than 30 years was a realtor at Centennial Real Estate in Bay Shore until her retirement in 1999.

"She was my mentor and the most honest person I ever knew," said Daisy Tricoche, a realtor at Centennial Real Estate who knew her for about 17 years. "Everyone just loved her and she'll be greatly missed."

Born in Germany, she lived there through World War II and emigrated to the United States on her own when she was 21. She settled in Glendale, Queens with her great aunt. After she married, she lived in Virginia, Brooklyn and finally in 1957 in a home she and her husband Ronald built on Lewis Circle.

According to her family, she loved to boat, was a gifted classical pianist and opera singer who loved to knit, crochet and do needlepoint.

She leaves behind her husband of 53 years, Ronald; her daughters: Carol Ann Bissonette, a Brookhaven Town Board member and Susan Elaine Schultz; her grandchildren, who called her "Oma": Erika and Johanna; her sister: Karola Effe of Itzehoe, Germany. She was predeceased by her daughter, Helen Treu.

Mrs. Wagner reposed at the Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home, 448 West Main Street, Babylon, on June 9 and 10, 2007. A private burial followed.
