W.I in°BOCES Mock Trial Competition Two West Islip School District teams comprised of fourth and fifth graders, under the direction and supervision of W.I.S.E. Enrichment teacher Vivian Hollinger, recently competed in the Western Suffolk BOCES Mock Trial Competition held at Dowling College. Each participating school across Long Island was given a case of attempted burglary and assault to solve. They were also given the affidavits of each witness and the evidence to be used in the case. The students needed to build a case for the Defense and Prosecution. Each Defense and Prosecution Team would compete againstan opposing team from another district on the day of competition. Points were earned for their presentation and skill of knowing how to question and respond during the trial process. Witnesses were not allowed to use any notes and attorneys were only allowed note cards. Hollinger reports that theteams "worked extremely hardin this arduous task with the help of Rich Thompson, a parent and attorney who dedi- cated much of his own time to preparethe children forcompetition.The childrenstudied, researched and investigated every angle of the case so they'd beprepared to "think on their feet" on competition day. The Defense Team was made up of six students: three attorneys and their witnesses. The Prosecution Team was comprised of seven students: three attorneys, their witnesses, and a court officer. W.I. Defense Team included: Sydney Matone, fourth grade, Manetuckl Vincent Cramer, fifth grade, Oquenock; Joseph Rushton, fourth grade, Captree; Michael Carboni, fifth grade, Oquenock; Caitlin Cosentino, fith grade, Bellew; and Craig Nelson, 5th grade, Westbrook.
W.I. Prosecution Team included: Kristin Gatto, fifth grade, Manetuck; Nicole Berardi, fifth grade, Oquenock; Stadtler Thompson,fourth grade, Bayview; Eric Harris, fourth grade, Bayview; Zachary Mike, fifth grade, Westbrook; Amanda Quinn, fourth grade, Bayview and Eric Barasch, fourth grade, Oquenock.
