Mary Ellen Sullivan named 2007 Nathaniel Conklin Award Winner; event July 8th

Mary Ellen Sullivan
Mary Ellen Sullivan has been awarded the Nathaniel Conklin Award for outstanding volunteer service in the spirit of Babylon Village. The "Nathaniel" will be officially presented on Sunday, July 8, at Babylon's 12th annual All- Village Celebration under the tent on the Conklin House Green. All proceeds from the celebration go toward the ongoing restoration project of the Conklin House.

Past winners of the Nathaniel Conklin Award are the late Stewart Aldrich, Isabel Gallagher, Betty Siegel, the late Rogers Howell, Linn Rohl, Bob Pasch, Joy Torrey, Alice Zaruka, the late John Rinklin, Charles Spencer, Joan and Bill Holmes, Aaron Stein and Eugene Turner. They compose the awards committee. Mayor Ralph Scordino is an ex-officio, non-voting member of the awards committee and chairman of the steering committee for the Conklin House Restoration.

The success of many of the group's community activities depends upon the volunteers who give of

their time and effort to achieve positive results.

Sullivan served as a member of the advisory council for the Lighthouse Preservation Society. For six years she was the recording secretary of the Babylon Youth Project, and she currently serves on the Conklin House steering committee. She was the historian for the Babylon Business and Professional Women and currently serves on their scholarship committee. She was one of the organizers of the Babylon Historical Society scholarship fund.

Before her husband Tom died in February, when the Sullivans served on a committee, it was, "We'll do that." Now when Mary Ellen Sullivan serves on a committee, often she can be heard saying,"I'll do that."
