Heard It On The Grapevine
By Frick and Frack

IT'S RETIREMENT TIME FOR SUPREME COURT JUSTICE DANIEL LOUGHLIN. After a long and distinguished career in the legal profession, Supreme Court Justice Daniel J. Loughlin of Babylon Village has retired. He had been an attorney for 50 years and a judge for 16 years. Prior to becoming a Supreme Court Justice in 1999 he was a judge in the District Court for nine years. He is very well known to Babylonians, having served as Village Attorney and also attorney for the Babylon Fire Department. He was a private practice attorney as a partner in the Babylon law firm of Fishel, Bowers and Loughlin. Justice Loughlin earned a Bachelor of Law degree from New York University and went on to earn a Masters of Law from Brooklyn Law School. He started his legal career on Wall Street, but wanted to spend more time with his wife Gloria and their daughters Claire and Laure. Claire Merz is an art teacher in the Massapequa Schools and Laure Klopsie is a psychologist in the West Babylon Schools. Although Dan is officially retired he's still very involved in the law. He now serves as a judicial hearing officer for Suffolk County in the Central Islip State Supreme Court. We wish Dan a long and happy retirement with his lovely wife, his children and grandchildren.

LOCAL REPUBLICANS' NUMBERS HAVE DWINDLED. Upon Dan's leaving the bench, for the first time in 40 years, Babylon Town does not have a resident as an elected Supreme Court Justice. Who would have thought this would happen in such a strong Republican area.

A FATHER'S DAY TRADITION. A large crowd of fathers along with their families and friends celebrated the special day at the Babylon Yacht Club under blue skies and perfect weather where they enjoyed a buffet brunch party featuring melon, eggs, sausage, pancakes, juice, mimosas, rolls, buns and more, all served and prepared by our wonder club volunteers. Paul Steinberg, as he always does, played beautiful music on the piano for our listening pleasure. Saw lots of familiar faces, among them: Barbara and Gil Schlerf, Irene Morris, Mary Rinklin, Kay Baker and Carol McTigue. Everyone was so glad to get together after the long winter. Bravo to all who made it happen.

VANDALS ARE AT IT AGAIN. Yes, a week ago Friday a group of teenagers came running out of the alley where Emerson's is located - they destroyed some of the planters, overturned chairs and generally caused havoc in the area. Police were at the scene questioning passerbys, but so far no arrests have been made as we went to press.

REMEMBER BILL THORNE FROM AMITYVILLE? W e had a delicious luncheon with Mary and Jim Grover and Mary Ellen Sullivan at Southward Ho last Friday, when a gentleman came over to the table to greet us. We hadn't seen Bill since World War II, so it was a very nice surprise to run into him and catch up a little bit on old times. P.S. Thank you Mary and Jim for a perfect afternoon.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL SEASON START AT OUR VILLAGE GOLF COURSE. Talked to Trustee Kevin Muldowney. Kevin brought us up to date on what's happening. The Men's and Women Leagues are off to a great start. Ed McCarthy heads up the men's league. Crystal Johnson is the leader of the women's group. There's something for just about everyone at the course. There's a children's group for kids from eight to twelve, as well as a group for teens. If you're interested in joining a group, call the golf course at 669-2340. The course is open for play for local groups, and four of our organizations have held tournaments there so far this season. And of course there are plenty of golfers who just enjoy a game on their own, and they've been utilizing the course in large numbers. Golf is a great sport for all ages, and we're so lucky to have this course right here in our Village. Thanks to our great pro, Joe Molloy, the golf club is one of the finest in the area.
